Boulder Mountain Thoughts

We only have a few days left to prepare for our trip to the Boulder Mountains. I am about to burst with excitement.

Here are some thoughts as you prepare, pack, and gear up.

Food:
We will be leaving St. George on Tuesday morning around 9:00 am. We can pack a lunch to eat in Loa or Bicknell. I generally don't take lunches. I just eat a late breakfast, early diner and snack in between. That leaves 4 Dinners and 4 breakfasts to prepare for. I spent $25 on 4 of those Mountain Home dehydrated meals. They are good but man that is a lot of cash. Consider something like Shells and cheese, or Ramen Noodles or something like that to save money. Anything that only requires water to prepare. You could probably eat well for the whole week for under $10. I got a 10 pack of instant oatmeal to eat for breakfast. They are cheep, easy, and not too heavy. I just use plastic utensils and never have a problem.

Fishing:
My brother and I caught fish and caught enough to have a lot of fun. We will be going later in the summer when the water temps have warmed slightly. Many fish will begin to move deeper and may be though to catch. I have treated this website like my Boulder Mountain Fishing Bible. Check it out for stuff to try. We had good success towing flys behind bubbles. I acutally tied on a wooly bigger and then 2 feet behind the wooly bugger a little tiny zebra midge. www.bouldermountainflyfishing.com

Gear:
There is a lot of gear that one could take but I would advise to take only what you really need. Flashlight, pliers, pocket knife, rope, and a first aid kit might be wise things to throw in. No need for every boy to bring their own tent. Tristen needs a tent partner and will be happy to carry someone's poles in exchange for a place to sleep.

Clothes:
I like to avoid cotton like jeans and hoodies. It is heavy and it will freeze you to death if it gets wet. I like wool socks to wic moisture and avoid blisters and sythetic fiber pants and shirts because the dry quickly and are warm even when wet. Definitely take a warm jacket as the nights get pretty cold and think layers. Shorts should be ok during the days but take some mosquito repellant. I hate mosquitos and will even wear a head net to keep them from annoying me. Sure I look dumb but it is worth it. No one will judge anyone for wearing the same shirt or pants two days in a row. It isn't a fashion show.

This will hopefully be a week that we will always remember. I am going to catch the biggest fish you ever saw.

Overall I am stoked!

These were taken at the Roadrunners game we went to for young men Tuesday night. We got seats right behind home plate. Seats were thanks to John Hafen. Roadrunners won 12-10.

Announcements

3 things.

First, our Tuesday night activity will begin at 6:45 pm. We will meet at the church and then go the St. George Road Runners baseball game. Tickets are courtesy of infowest so if you are looking for high speed internet give them a call. John Hafen may be able to get us into box seats once we get there. Bring a few bucks if you want a hotdog and drink.

Second, the young men are in charge of setting up chairs in the month of July. Please be at the church at 8:30 on Sunday to complete this assignment.

Finally, we have decided that since you all worked so hard washing windows we will use that money to help you buy food and supplies for our Boulder Mountain Trip. The bishop will be giving each young man a $15 gift card to Walmart and a $15 gift card to Sportsman's Warehouse.
We will give these to the parents so that they can be used on appropriate items. Hopefully that will cover a large portion of the cost of food and supplies.

For young men this last Tuesday we went to Pine Valley reservoir to practice fishing before our trip to the boulders. (original plan was to go to razor ridge but we did this instead). We had a great time. We caught about 7 or 8 fish all together. We are probably going to go back now that we know what works to catch fish. The best thing we tried was a black woolybugger with a half filled clear bubble.

Tuesday, June 23rd, Activity

Tuesday, June 23rd, our young men activity will be fishing. For the sake of time and money, and ease of catching fish we are going to go to the Razor Ridge pond just south of highway 9 on Telegraph. Bring your fishing gear! This will be a great chance to practice some of the techniques needed to catch the fish at the boulder mountains.

We will meet at the church at 6:30 pm. Brother Bench will provide transportation on "The Bus".
Could be rather warm so bring something to stay hydrated.

What are the Fish Biting?

As we get ready to go after a bunch of lunkers it would be important to know what these big fish like. Click Here to be directed to a site dedicated to Boulder Mountain Fishing.

After visiting this site it turns out that the big fish I caught was NOT a brookie but his cousin the Splake.

I don't mind. It was still a trill.

Water Kick Ball

Probably the coolest combined activity in the history of combined activities.

Just got back from scouting out the area where we are taking our backpacking trip. It was a tough job but someone had to do it. This is the trail head to Blind Lake. the first .75 miles is a where we gain most of the elevation. Then it is not too bad. Having been there I suggest that we spend the first night at Blind Lake, then hike to Fish Creek Lake for nights 2 and 3 and then back to Blind night 4 and out the next morning. That should break up the hiking a little and get us in the best spots to catch fish and see beautiful scenery.

This little Colorado Cutthroat took a fly that I was fly casting at Honeymoon Lake. My brother caught 3 Tiger Trout on a Zebra Midge and a green wooley bugger. I caught a couple of Tiger trout on little fly patterns and some were also taken on small panther martins.

My brother, who you all know as "Mr. Bench", caught the most fish and had good success with a zebra midge trailed 24" behind a wooley bugger dragged behind a half full bubble. He landed spawning Cutthroat at Fish Creek Lake and some tigers at Honeymoon.

However I caught the biggest fish (using his green wooley bugger with a brass head).Because of the photo angle you can't get a clear idea of the girth but this was a large fishy. I guess between 2 and 3 pounds. This is the biggest brook trout I have ever caught. I plan to catch his big brother in July.

I hope that this got you all excited. We were so busy catching fish that didn't get pictures of the beautiful setting. This is an amazing place we are going and I hope that you are all as excited as I am.

Thanks to all the young men and leaders that helped with our window washing fundraiser. Yes it was very tiring but it was worth it. Also thanks to all those who donated.
Just some of the scenery on our camp out at Warm Springs. We went on April 26 2009.
All of us as we were leaving the pool at Warm Springs Nevada. The water in the pool was from the creeks that ran all throughout the place so it was very warm. We played basketball in the pool most of the entire campout.
